SESSION OVERVIEW

Communal Coping through Contentious & Uncertain Times
The value of being in community to collectively navigate current social and political challenges cannot be understated and is critically important for those in the helping professions. This workshop will present findings from the presenter’s research study, in which communal coping emerged as a key finding, helping to maintain critical consciousness, mitigate persistent stress, promote healing, and cultivate a deep sense of belonging during very uncertain times. Other key findings will be presented that call for critical self-reflection and reckoning in response to hostile discourse and legislative actions that have dismantled historical gains toward justice and equality. This workshop will present a model for creating space that invites the naming of systemic issues and current events within the framework of communal coping. Consistently offering these opportunities in service communities, supervision, training, or in the classroom constitutes small yet intentional moments of action. This workshop will provide attendees with examples of how to cultivate communal coping spaces, engage in reckoning, and maintain critical self-reflection. We will offer insights into inviting meaningful conversations about issues affecting service providers and the communities they serve, navigating difficult moments, and addressing the challenges that helping professionals face at this time in history.
